A Scenic Rail Day Trip to Lampang

If you’re craving a true taste of Northern Thailand beyond the usual tourist trails, this day trip is just the ticket for a journey through time. Step aboard a charming local train, ride through mountain passes and misty valleys, explore a former teak town by horse-drawn carriage, and discover hidden temples rich in history and artistry.

Here’s what an unforgettable day from Chiang Mai to Lampang looks like:

Your day starts with a hotel pick-up and a relaxed transfer to Chiang Mai’s train station. At 9:30 AM, you’ll board Local Train No. 408, a third-class carriage that’s full of character. No frills, no AC—but that’s the beauty of it. Open windows, wooden seats, and locals chatting over snacks—this ride brings back the charm of slow travel and offers a peek into everyday Thai life.

The journey winds through Lamphun, with its classic station that hasn’t changed much since the early 1900s. As the train gently rocks through nine sleepy stations, you’re following the original Northern Line, first opened in the1920s. Keep your camera ready - this is no ordinary ride.

One of the highlights is the crossing of the Tha Chomphu Bridge, lovingly dubbed the "White Bridge", built in 1919. With jungle hills in the background and the open air all around, it’s a perfect spot to capture the magic of the Northern Thai countryside.

Shortly after, the train stops briefly at Khuntan Station, the highest and most scenic on this line. Then comes the grand entrance into Khuntan Tunnel - Thailand’s longest railway tunnel, stretching almost 700 meters through the mountain. Emerging from the darkness, you’ll feel like you've stepped into a different era.

Arriving around noon in Nakhon Lampang, it’s time for a relaxing lunch at Wooden House Café, a cozy riverside spot with a view of the graceful Rachadapisek Bridge. This is your moment to savor the slower pace of Lampang—and maybe some local northern specialties.

After the break, climb aboard a horse-drawn carriage - a nostalgic ride through the streets of Lampang. Known locally as "rot ma", these carriages date back to the late 19th century, when Lampang thrived as a teak trade hub, attracting Burmese traders who brought their horses along. It’s a cultural legacy that’s alive and trotting.

The carriage rolls through the old Forestry Quarter, crossing the iconic bridge and passing colonial-style buildings that whisper stories of a bygone era.

You’ll visit Wat Sri Chum, one of the most striking Burmese-style temples in Thailand. Look up at the multi-tiered pyatthat roofs, and you’ll see intricate wood carvings and golden accents—a nod to the Burmese influence that shaped Lampang's spiritual architecture.

Then it’s on to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, about 16 km from town. This is one of Northern Thailand’s most sacred and beautifully preserved wooden temples, believed to have been founded by Queen Chamadevi, a legendary figure in Lanna history. It’s a true architectural gem with peaceful courtyards and ancient relics tucked away in every corner.

On the way back to Chiang Mai, we’ll make a final stop at Thung Kwian Market - a favorite among locals. It’s the perfect spot to grab some take-home goodies: fragrant green chili paste, crispy pork, spicy sausages, and handwoven textiles. Think of it as your edible (and wearable) souvenir shop.

Insider Tip : For the best train experience, grab a seat near the window on the left side for great views heading south. Bring along a light sweater—the train can get breezy in the mountains—and don’t forget your camera. You'll want to capture the scenes rolling by and the timeless feel of this entire journey.

This day trip is a beautiful blend of discovery, nostalgia, and real Thai flavor for the traveler who enjoys the scenic route. Ready to hop on board?
