Discover Bangkok’s historic Heart on Foot.

Rattanakosin Island, the original heart of Bangkok, has been the centre of Siam’s political, cultural, and spiritual life for over 200 years. Bordered by the Chao Phraya River and protected by ancient canals, this area was meticulously planned when the capital moved here in 1782.

This half-day walking tour explores eight of the oldest and most intriguing buildings from the Rattanakosin era — each a window into Thailand’s past. The route is designed for a relaxed pace, sustainable travel, and rich cultural encounters. Optional Tuk-Tuk transfers are available for comfort, with the tour starting and ending conveniently near a river pier or MRT station.

ITINERARY

1. Drum Tower

Begin at the reconstructed Drum Tower, originally built by King Rama I as the city’s timekeeping system. Three drums once signaled war, fire, and the time of day, echoing across the old capital before the invention of the public clock.

2. Loha Prasat – The Metal Castle

A short walk leads to Loha Prasat at Wat Ratchanatdaram. This architectural marvel — the only metal castle in Thailand and one of only three ever built worldwide — rises with 37 spires representing the virtues toward enlightenment. The upper floors offer panoramic views across Rattanakosin.

3. Sala Sahathai Samakhom

Located beside the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, this European-style building served as Thailand’s first museum in 1874. It was established under King Rama V to display fine royal crafts and rare collections to the public.

4. Praisaniyakarn (Old Post Office)

The elegant neoclassical structure near Phra Pok Klao Bridge was the starting point of Thailand’s postal service in the late 19th century. It marks the moment when written communication began connecting the kingdom’s provinces.

5. Gurudwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha

This vibrant Sikh temple, built through community fundraising, welcomes visitors of all faiths. Modest dress is required, and head coverings are provided. Guests may experience Sikh religious traditions or join in the langar, a shared vegetarian meal.

Pause at The Old Town Café, a heritage-style coffee shop nearby. Enjoy artisan coffee or Thai iced tea in a cool, atmospheric setting before continuing the walk.

6. Wat Pho Thai Traditional Medical School

The first Thai medical school, founded by King Rama III, is located within Wat Pho. The temple’s walls are engraved with ancient medical diagrams, preserving knowledge of Thai massage, herbal remedies, and healing postures.

7. Royal Clock Tower (Replica)

Once the first public clock in Thailand, the original tower stood as a landmark for travelers along the river. The bicentennial replica restores this historic symbol to the Rattanakosin skyline.

8. National Theater

End the tour at the National Theater, the cultural stage for traditional Thai dance, masked khon performances, and classical music. Even without a performance, its architecture reflects Thailand’s modern commitment to the arts.
