If you slip out of Chiang Mai just after sunrise, when vendors are setting up their morning stalls and the city is still soft and quiet, you’ll notice how quickly the road leans into the hills. Within 40 minutes, the air changes—cooler, cleaner, touched with pine—and you’re on your way to Mon Cham, one of the North’s most beloved viewpoints. Whether you come as a private day trip from Chiang Mai or choose to linger overnight in the mountains, this journey always unfolds at a beautiful, unhurried pace.
And with our partner Butler Driver, the winding mountain road becomes part of the pleasure—smooth, safe, and led by someone who knows every curve like an old friend.

Before Mon Cham became famous for its dreamy sea mist and chilly year-round weather, the ridge was known as Kiu Seau—a remote stretch of forest later turned into an opium-growing area. Everything changed when the Royal Project stepped in. Slowly, the land transformed into the Nong Hoi Royal Project, replacing poppies with artichokes, rosemary, strawberries, grapes, lemon thyme, chamomile, and research gardens that support local livelihoods.
If you come between October and February, you’ll likely wake to a cool breeze and fog rolling through the valleys like drifting silk.
Two viewpoints define this ridge:
Mon Long, perched on the eastern peak, offers sweeping views of the Royal Project below and the sea mist that makes people whisper “wow” without realizing it.

The road up is beautiful but crooked, which is why many travelers prefer to leave the driving to someone experienced. At the top, you’ll find hundreds of small tented stays and mini-resorts—especially popular with young Thai travelers seeking a lively, social vibe. The scene can get busy on weekends, but the mountain air has a way of softening everything.
And sometimes, all you need is a simple espresso at a tiny hillside café—fresh beans, crisp breeze, and a view that makes every sip feel special.

One of the most rewarding parts of Mon Cham is stepping off the road and following the small paths locals use. We trekked for three hours from our lodge, weaving through farms and berry patches toward the much-talked-about Pong Yeang Berry Windyhill Café. The scenery steals your breath long before the climb does—rolling hills, terraced fields, and pockets of forest where the air carries hints of mint and soil. Once you reach the café, reward yourself with their Avocado Honey Lime Shake—bright, creamy, refreshing, perfect after a long walk.

Staying overnight in Mon Cham usually means choosing a tent—it's the most popular option, especially for travelers chasing the cool night air and that feeling of sleeping above the clouds. But if you prefer something cozy and peaceful, Ban Rai Tin Thai Ngarm Eco Lodge is a wonderful, comfortable alternative.
This little mountain retreat feels like staying in a friend’s home—airy wooden cabins with screen windows on three sides, verandas front and back, and the jungle leaning in close with banana trees and bamboo brushing the edges of the deck. When the sun dips, the mountains turn deep orange and purple, fading into the kind of quiet that fills you rather than emptying you.
At night, crickets, frogs, and a nearby fountain take over the soundtrack. Dinner comes straight to your balcony—a simple hotpot eaten under the stars, warm steam rising into the cool air. In the morning, the lodge offers mountain bikes and a hand-drawn map to nearby trails and local spots. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after the trip ends.
